Topic
: Lessons Learned from the Rapid Deployment of the Largest Energy Storage Array to Solve Grid Reliability in Southern California.

In record time, AES deployed both a 30 MW array in Escondido, California, the single largest lithium-ion energy storage array in the world, and a second smaller array totaling 7.5 MW in El Cajon. The San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) owned Advancion energy storage arrays will be able to provide a combined 37.5 MW of power for four continuous hours and will serve as a 75 MW flexible resource to support the reliability and transformation of Southern California’s electric grid.

This accomplishment was made possible by the contributions of a number of parties coming together to solve a critical reliability issue. For example, the State of California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) ensured that California realized the benefits of energy storage, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) was an active champion for the solicitation and deployment of energy storage, and SDG&E and Southern California Edison (SCE) were able to accurately evaluate energy storage solutions and pushed for utility scale solutions.

This presentation will take a look at some of the steps taken that led to this historic project being deployed in California and focus on lessons learned for all stakeholders in Australia. The presentation will also shed light on the rapid deployment of energy storage, including a time-lapse video of the installation and lessons learned from this project.
